Piper, a 9-year-old Border Collie, loved his job as a Wildlife Control Canine. His job description was to chase birds and wildlife off the runway at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City. He was an expert, equipped with all the necessary gear, and truly loved his job.

He was adopted by Brian Edwards, airport operations supervisor, in 2012. Just 3 short years later, Piper started working with his dad at the airport.

Piper became an internet sensation and admired by many across the world. With his own website and huge social media following, Piper is loved by all. He was an instant mood booster for all who met him or followed him online.

His Facebook page stated, “It’s definitely not about the fame for this guy. He just simply wants [to] apply his talent and work his butt off, nothing more. Don’t get me wrong, dude’s handled the fame well, but in the end, it’s always been about the job.”

According to Airport K-9 website, Piper chased 8367 birds, patrolled 1907 miles, and worked 6206 hours. That is impressive!

Piper and his dad lived a life of adventure. In 2016, Piper’s paws left the runway to fly in the sky for his first skydive.

Over the past year, Piper had been battling prostate cancer. The disease took his life Wednesday night. He died peacefully in the arms of his dad. Edwards shared about the day he passed: “Today, Piper enjoyed a pain-free day, filled with love from family and friends, mostly his fellow airport employees. He played soccer, got some much deserved butt scratches and yes, he chased away one last snowy owl.”

Piper is a legend and will be missed. The love and friendship shared between Piper and Edwards is obvious and something for all dog owners to copy. Thank you for sharing him with the world!
