This year’s Miss USA is not only a brilliant, beautiful woman and an inspiration to many, she’s also the first winner to be a member of the military.

Deshauna Barber, 26, was crowned Miss USA on June 5, 2016. She is a logistics commander for the U.S. Army and an IT analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce. She was commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in 2011 and is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland.

“As a woman in the United States Army, I think we are just as tough as men,” Barber said. “As a commander of my unit, I’m powerful, I am dedicated. Gender does not limit us in the United States.”

On her platform as Miss USA, Barber is committed to increasing awareness of PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployments. She urged this year’s presidential candidates, including former pageant owner Donald Trump, to focus on veterans issues, including untangling some of the messes in the Veterans Administration.

Barber is from Washington, D.C. and a lieutenant in the Army Reserves, although she plans to take a break from her service, which she has already brought up to her superior officer.

“My commander should be watching right now,” Barber said. “Two days a month is definitely not active duty. It is an obligation that I signed up for but they are very flexible in the United States Army Reserves.”

Miss Hawaii Chelsea Hardin, 24, was named first runner-up in the contest, and Miss Georgia Emanii Davis, 22, second runner-up. Barber will now compete in the Miss Universe contest.
