Arguably one of the biggest pop culture stars of the 20th Century, Marilyn Monroe was a presence like no other. So, in the early months of 1954, she decided to make her presence known in a place where American troops needed their spirits to be uplifted: Korea.

How much did American soldiers in Korea love Ms. Monroe? Well, in 1951, the actress was declared “Miss Cheesecake of 1951” by the army newspaper Stars and Stripes. The newspaper says the title was given to her because it reflected the soldiers’ preference to her.

Marilyn Monroe performed songs from her films as part of this USO show for over 60,000 members of the U.S. Military over a four-day period while in Korea.
