When 90 “Archangels” from Company B, 101st Aviation Regiment arrived at Fort Campbell just after midnight, there was a huge crowd of family and loved ones waiting to welcome them home with a special homecoming celebration. It was happy and long-awaited reunion, since the soldiers had spent the past nine months away from their loved ones while deployed in Afghanistan. For one of the soldiers, the homecoming was especially significant — he had someone to meet for the very first time.

When Army Specialist Grant Pinkham left for deployment his wife was pregnant and getting ready to give birth. That meant that he had to wait the whole nine months on a tour of duty before he could meet his own newborn daughter. “It’s hard to explain, it’s just a whole bunch of emotions wrapped into one. I’m just so happy to see her. That’s all I can say,” said Pinkham after seeing his baby girl — now more a toddler than a newborn — for the very first time.

It’s hard to imagine how he must have felt knowing that he had a newborn daughter at home while he was so far away in Afghanistan, but the look on his face as he holds her for the first time is so heartwarming!
